In 1965, people dressed to the nines when traveling by plane. On board, they were served the finest foods, top-shelf liquor flowed freely, and they were catered to by glamorous, attractive, well-trained professionals. They called them "air hostesses," and we expected them to look like this:
Today, people dress in their pajamas and sweat pants when traveling by plane. On board, they are served inedible food (if they get any food at all), miniscule bottles of liquor are available for a price, and they are catered to by well-trained professionals who, for better or worse, are no longer required to be either glamorous or attractive. They call them "flight attendants," and they look like this:
With all due respect to the undoubtedly fine professionals pictured above, and with full knowledge of the horribly sexist ideology that would dictate hiring only sexy young babes, we can't help but feel a bit wistful for a time when air travel meant being served a martini and chateaubriand by a Pucci-clad glamourpuss.
I survived my trip to Las Vegas because Delta was ready when we were!
