We Swear...

...that this will be our last Marilyn Maye post for a while, if only because she's not due back in New York until at least 2009. We attended her closing show at The Metropolitan Room last night, making our attendance a total of four performances during this run, plus her screening at The Paley Center. Needless to say, she's just about our favorite person in the world right now.

As has become standard, we ran into Maxene Andrews' adopted daughter, Lynda, again; and this time, we sat next to Marilyn's daughter, Kristi Tucker, who is a redheaded firecracker and a marvelous performer in her own right. A memorable Metropolitan evening last year: Marilyn and Kristi doing an impromptu duet of "Put on a Happy Face."

Seen: nightclub grande dame Julie Wilson; film noir siren Colleen Gray; the widow of composer Burton Lane (to whom Marilyn spontaneously and touchingly serenaded a few bars of "Too Late Now," one of Lane's best songs); noted homosexual Michael Feinstein; and many, many Broadway and cabaret performers on their Sunday nights off. In fact, it took Marilyn nearly 20 minutes to introduce them all. From out of left field, our favorite celebrity in the audience was The Amazing Kreskin!

THE MARVELOUS MARILYN MAYE AND THE AMAZING KRESKIN

We should tell you that we opted for deco simplicity, it being Sunday night and all: black and white houndstooth blazer; dark charcoal cashmere V neck; simple white shirt; black wool trousers; black calfskin benchmades; and a little chinchilla scarf. It was cold, after all.

Incidentally, Ms. Maye is off to warmer climes in January, when she plays a run at The Colony in Palm Beach. Since our readership is undoubtedly vast and far-reaching, if you have any information about The Colony (pro or con) which would help us decide whether or not to make the trip, please drop us a line. (E-mail contact has been added to our profile page.)

  1. Chinchilla Scarf!
I love the sound of that.

  2. It IS rather fabulous, if I may be a tad immodest. I always keep it very discreetly tucked into the collar of my overcoat, but it's always a conversation piece.

  3. The Colony was the place to stay in Palm Beach at one time. I stayed there with Town and Country magazine. Have no idea about it now.

  4. Well, of COURSE it was the place to stay -- you were there, darling!

(Have you ever read Patrick Dennis's "The Joyous Season"? Another one I should lend you. For some reason, your comment reminded me of a very funny chapter in it.)

  5. Speak of lending... or not, that mink would have come in handy tonight. Off tonight to Marilyn's concert here in KC at an intimate theatre seating about 100. No booze, but that's what bars next door are for.

I'm wearing black cowboy boots, black Prada rock-washed jeans, white linen snap-down Ralph Lauren shirt, and gay-issued black leather jacket. Oh, and Costco's Kirkland tighty-whiteies (have to economize someplace).

  6. Kansastock -- J'adore the textural contrast of denim, leather, and linen! We expect a full report, of course.

  7. Night didn't start out well... no cocktails as adjacent bar/grill closed. Marilyn was dressed in black to start. Sequined jacket over tuxedo slacks and platform shoes. Then half way through, while band plays, she does a quick change (ala Madonna) into this blue floor length gown about 1/2 size (I'm being kind) too small. Music good as ever with a didde of tv commercials she did back in the 60's. Although there was no one famous like us in the audience, we did bring the average age down to 73ish. Although I prefer the 'nightclub' venue, a good show overall.
