Mike Henry was born to play football (the above photo is from his stint with the Los Angeles Rams); but he was really born to play Tarzan.
During filming, Henry was bitten on the cheek by an overzealous chimp, requiring 20 stitches to close the wound. We probably would have tried to take a bite out of Mike, too, given half a chance. Following his brief run as the Lord of the Apemen, Henry continued to act, most notably as Jackie Gleason's son in the Smokey and the Bandit series. Henry's character was jilted by Sally Fields' in the first film, which means that Ralph Kramden's son, Tarzan, was left at the altar by the Flying Nun.
Happy Birthday, Mike Henry (August 15, 1936)! You can swing with us anytime.
Oh goodness, I remember seeing reruns as a child and being hypnotized by him. Is it any wonder I turned gay?
ReplyDeleteWas it his, er, swinging pendulum which hypnotized you?
