According to Frank Castelluccio in “The Other Side of Ethel Mertz: The Life Story of Vivian Vance” Lucy was notoriously afraid of going under the knife. In her later series, after I love Lucy, she would wear a red wig and tape her cheeks and neck up under it in order to giver herself a temporary facelift for the camera.
