A few years ago while standing in line to meet Charo at the late, great Medium Rare records in San Francisco, I noticed that the man behind me was also admiring an album cover featuring a topless Joey prominently displayed in the window. He was an elder gentlemen with a beard straight out of Mad Magazine that also served as a nest to a discombobulated Barbie doll. After discussing the virtues of that recording, he told me that he was the founding member and president of the Joey Heatherton International Fan Club, a distinction he's held for over 30 years. Our conversation next veered to Serta mattresses, Where Love Has Gone, 70s variety shows, and The Happy Hooker Goes to Washington. This means nothing to nobody, but it does illustrate that even in this day and age, it's possible to bond with a complete stranger over Joey Heatherton.
