There Never Was a Woman Like Gilda
I'm all about the sultry brunette gals these days, aren't I?
I was watching Gilda again the other night; aside from having one of the most wonderful entrances of a leading lady, ever...
...it's also a dynamite, psycho-sexual drama that fairly seethes with sultry, murderous, sensual, treacherous tension. You can practically feel the humid Brazilian air and the beads of sweat popping on your forehead. And, for my money, no other actress was ever as delectably gorgeous as Rita Hayworth in this film. She's walking, talking, (kind of) singing sex.
The justifiably legendary "Put the Blame on Mame" sequence is still deliriously erotic, and all Gilda ever "strips" off is one long, black glove. Incidentally, the torchy vocals were supplied by the fabulous Anita Ellis; both she and Rita Hayworth would eventually sadly succumb to the ravages of Alzheimer's Disease.
