Over at Cafe Muscato, we were introduced to some deluded white people who thought they were Supremes. One of our mottos in life is to never accept imitations; here we present Miss Scherrie Payne, the last official lead singer of The Supremes. She's a fabulous singer, a great gal, and a worthy successor to storied legacy of sequins, beads and feathers.

She's no Missx Ross...but she was a Band of Gold. :) It's ironic that as I type this, I am listening to Claudine "Get me a Xanax" Longet singing, "Ain't No Mountain High Enough." Brilliant. I've always wondered what this song would sound like with a phenobarbital drip. Where did you find it?????
ReplyDeleteThe girls look good, but why Stoned Love? I suppose there are more obscure Supremes tunes, but I can't think of them. Maybe thy're too obscure.
ReplyDeleteScooter -- I don't know what this says about me, but 99.9% of the songs I upload to Imeem sre ripped directly from CD's and vinyl that I personally own. So, that Longet-Sings-Ross gem comes from a 1971 album which also features the ex-Mrs. Andy Williams breathily tackling, more appropriately, The Carpenters and, less appropriately, The Jackson 5!
ReplyDeletePeenee -- This is the best video I could find of a Scherrie-led performance; most of the post-1975 Supremes footage is absolutely painful: bad costumes, bad material, bad choreography, without even the charm of camp to make it palatable.
