Trivia time: In 1925, MGM teamed with
Movie Weekly magazine to hold a contest, bestowing $1,000 upon the lucky reader who chose the perfect name to rechristen their latest starlet, Lucille LeSueur. But, there were multiple entries with the winning name: "Joan Arden." Rather than award multiple prizes, the thrifty Metro went with the second choice: "
Joan Crawford."
I can't take my eyes off the scary cage-of-a-purse Joan's sporting. Is she carrying a bomb in that thing?
ReplyDeletewhole lotta leanin' goin' on.
ReplyDeleteLove the one of Joan wearing a stole with her mouth open. I think you can see her tonsils...
ReplyDeleteAhhh yes, MGM, such a thrifty studio. That sausage didn't grow on trees.
ReplyDeleteI recently read that Eve Arden was very touchy about her age and that she chose her name at the makeup counter when she saw the brands Evening In Paris & Elizabeth Arden. Joan Crawford never put on airs about being raised poor, but she never tolerated interviewers mentioning that she was in silent films. One of Joan's first silent movies was titled,"Tramp Tramp Tramp."
