i think he was married to barbara stanwyck...
I JUST finished a bio on his yesterday. It was very disappointing to read quote after quote of him bashing "those fags." He's another one that had a LOT of hangups, issues and idiosyncracies. And, yes, he was married to Barbara Stanwyck and she collected 15% of his salary as alimony from the time of their divorce in 1951 until the day of his death!
And he behaved very badly during the 1950's Witch Hunts. Of course, what's on the inside eventually shows, and his great beauty deteroriated significantly during the 1940's and 1950's... But, oh, how he looked in 1936!
He was desperate to shake the "Pretty Boy" image he had in the 1930's and did everything he could think of to weather his face and become a craggy old man, which, sadly, is what he wound up as on the inside, too! He was known to go beserk over steaks not cooked to his liking and groused about almost everything.
With the exception of his role as Armand Duval in Camille, he always struck me as utterly fraudulent. There was this bogus butch thing going on, which fooled nobody. Actually his most convincing role was as Robert Mitchum's evil brother in that Katharine Hepburn film whose title escapes me. Nonetheless~nice eyelashes.
