Hello, Kitty!

L-R: Ann Miller, June Allyson, Dolores Gray, Joan Collins, Ann Sheridan and Joan Blondell in The Opposite Sex (1956, MGM)

If only they had started a whispering campaign to get Helen Rose removed from the film.

  1. Maybe my favourite 50s film! When I was a kid there was a Lux soap advert in a magazine featuring all the ladies lined up in their ritzy costumes which I knew even then was fabulous and couldn't wait to see the movie when it came to my town, and yes I loved it. Don't forget Carolyn Jones, Agnes Moorehead (as the Countess!), Alice Pearce (the Jungle Red saleslady!) and Charlotte Greenwood down on the ranch in Reno, or Jeff Richards in the canoe as Buck Winston! Dolores Gray though is a superb Sylvia and wears some ritzy outfits, and June Allyson sings - and dig those numbers with Joan Collins !!!

  2. For years I kept trying to tell my straight and lesser gay friends that there was a color musical version of "The Women" but the doubting Thomases never believed me.

  3. The best is when Allyson slaps the crap out of Collins in the dressing room and her earring goes flying off.

  4. Unfortunately, it was "The Women" with most of the cleverness surgically removed. However, it was fun to see them careening around the divorce ranch in their big Chrysler convertible.

  5. OK, so this remake does not have the intellectual cleverness of the original. However, if you want the bitchy wisecracks and the fabulous fashions and watch with no thought required, get the movie and pop this baby in.
