Miss Isabel Jewell

She would have been 101 today.

Miss Jewell specialized in portraying gun molls (Manhattan Melodrama), hookers (Lost Horizon) and white trash (Gone with the Wind), which, truth be told, sounds a lot more fun than being, say, Loretta Young. By the 1950's however, she had acquired a certain sophistication and elegance.

Miss Jewell's final film before her death in 1964 was Ciao, Manhattan!, in which she portrayed Edie Sedgewick's mother. Which is just about as fabulous a send-off as one can hope for.
