"Don't MENTION smoked oysters, they turn me positively GREEN!"

Miss Phyllis Povah (July 21, 1893 - August 7, 1975)

We love her! George Cukor must have loved her, too: after directing her in The Women (1939), he cast her again, a dozen years later, in The Marrying Kind and Pat and Mike (both 1952). In between, Povah scored several successes on Broadway, most notably the hit play Dear Ruth (1944-46). She and Marjorie Main also held the distinction of being the only two performers from the original stage production of The Women (1936-38) to be asked to reprise their roles for the film.

Miss Povah's birthday seems as good an excuse as any for us to watch The Women for the umpteenth time. As if we needed any.
