Unlike The Shirelles, swinging and swaying in their matching crinolines and party dresses; or The Supremes, preening about in Vegas-ready sequined sheaths; or even The Ronettes, with their extended liquid eyeliner and trashy attitude, The Shangri-Las were the undisputed bad asses of the girl group genre. The Shangs sang of dead biker boyfriends, estranged parents, teen runaways and date rape victims -- not your typical Top 40 fare of the time. Their brief but blazing stardom lasted from 1964 to 1966; and they managed to get their records banned in Britain and be accused of kidnapping a male fan (at gunpoint!) in the process. Original lead singer Mary Weiss recently released her very first solo album, to great acclaim...and that's called glad.
