The Sincerest Forms of Figure Flattery

Until the mod culture of Carnaby Street was in full swing(in' Sixties), and the rest of the world started copying them, the Brits had a practice of taking the best of American pop culture, and either plagarising it entirely, or transmuting it slightly. The results were always invariably inferior to the originals, often rather charming and endearing, and decidedly British. Sonically, this resulted in veddy English versions of rockabilly, soul and girl group records; while at the cinema and in "men's magazines," British Blonde Bombshells competed against Marilyn, Jayne, et al.

Looking at the three most successful Brit bombshells today, Diana Dors, June Wilkinson and Sabrina are Glamazons of such ridiculously outsized proportions, it's clear that the Brits were falling all over themselves to outdo the Americans. It's this kind of goony imitation-cum-competition that we love; that, and we just really adore any excuse for posting photos of cheap blondes in lurex pedal pushers.
