About 10 years ago, I heard from an older lesbian (76 at the time) that Miss Lamour, and not Miss Gale, was the original subject of the phrase 'friend of Dorothy's'! Apparently, Dorothy Lamour always had a large gaggle of gay friends fluttering about and the accepted code around Hollywood became, "Excuse me, are you a friend of Dorothy's?".
True? Who knows, but the woman who told me was old enough to know and had been on the scene, so...
