I'm so conflicted about Vera. A perfect lady, to the point of being a bit of stick, and yet, often, as in this photo, somehow implying that her Secret Lady Place was pretty well known around town.
I think that her name did her in. Couldn't they have come up with something better than "Vera"?
It sounds so harsh. Not quite good enough to be Marilyn, of Elizabeth, Constance or even Babette. But Vera, like Nan, Gladys and Mildred are all women who are hard as rhinestones, even if their hearts are golden and they pour double shots on the house.
