  2. So was she really any good or was it just her connections that got her jobs? I've never heard her.

  3. I can't vouch for her musical or acting ability; however, having seen several of her appearances as a guest panelist on What's My Line?, she comes across as endearingly goofy, and stops Just This Much Short of being irritating. She probably played better on the stage.

  4. Was Phyllis Newman really any good? She was terrific. The photos here are from "Subways are for Sleeping" and Phyllis won the Supporting Actress in a Musical Tony award for her performance. Also nominated in that category was Barbra Streisand for "I Can Get It For You Wholesale." There is a cast album for 'Subways' and Newman is the stand-out on the recording. She was Judy Holliday's stand-by for 'Bells Are Ringing' and Barbara Harris's stand-by for 'The Apple Tree.' Having married well, she didn't need to continue to work, but she continued to be hired. Her health is poor now, but even 10 years ago she was at Papermill Playhouse belting out "Who's That Woman?" in FOLLIES. It's been on YouTube, if you care to check it out.
