This was our favorite song in the first grade; our others were Sheena Easton's "Morning Train," Melissa Manchester's "You Should Hear How She Talks About You," and Olivia Newton-John's "Physical," which should have given our mother a clue.
Speaking of Livvy, she celebrates a birthday today. We've always liked her, and give her a lot of credit: she's survived Xanadu, Twist of Fate, and tons of cheesy 1980's videos:

I may still have a rotator cuff injury from flinging myself around on a dance floor in Boston repeatedly to "Gloria" when it first came out. It had a wonderful, building instrumental section.

Poor thing was not one of our better singers, was she. That said, the big hit when I was in first grade was Lawrence Welk's "Calcutta."

Ok, I way only 22 when we started 'callin Gloria', but had already been through the underage chicken twink phase, the dazzling urbanite phase, the hateful, "what did we do last night" shrewish drunk phase and was headlong into the newly sober phase. Clear-headedly flinging myself about the dance floor.

OMG! "You really don't rememba- was it something that he said?" "Gloria" was the backdrop to heady days of college dances, major crushes and romantic heartbreaks, and, inevitably, deeply regrettable fashion choices (feathered hair; parachute pants; boat-neck tees, you name it).
