The Wasp Woman

We should have known that one of SSUWAT's most cherished friends, MC of the fabulous MattAdore, would be the first to recognize our latest Mystery Guest. Yes, cherubs, that prettily plump girl would grow up and slim down to become the astonishingly wasp-waisted Vera-Ellen! Sadly, it's widely believed that Vera-Ellen's early chunkiness and subsequent success as "the smallest waist in Hollywood" were the cause and effect of a silent battle with anorexia. She also had to deal with the crushing blow of losing her only child to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome in 1963, after which she completely withdrew from public life. Vera-Ellen has given us endless hours of pleasure thanks to her brief, but fabulous, film career; we only hope that she's moved on to a better, more peaceful place. MC, our darling, when do we recreate the "Sisters" number from White Christmas?

Very Vera

Apparently, if you were named "Vera" in the Golden Age of Hollywood, you were guranteed fabulosity, if not superstardom.

Still Dead
Miss Inger Stevens (1934 - 1970)
Miss Vera-Ellen (1921 - 1981)
Miss Edie Adams (1927 - 2008)
Miss Sandra Dee (1942 - 2005)
Miss Sheree North (1932 - 2005)The Fairy Godmother of us all, Thombeau, inspires us in many ways, most of them insane. For instance, he recently reminded us that Stella Stevens, Mitzi Gaynor, Ruta Lee, Carol Lynley and Mamie Van Doren are, in fact, still alive. Which naturally also reminded us that Inger Stevens, Vera-Ellen, Edie Adams, Sandra Dee and Sheree North are, in fact, still dead.

Sugar & Spice
On February 15, gloriously glamorous Marisa Berenson (February 15, 1947), suavely exotic Cesar Romero (February 15, 1907 - January 1, 1994), and vaguely dangerous Gale Sondergaard (February 15, 1899 - August 14, 1985) were brought into this world.

In vivid contrast, February 16 brought forth a whirling dervish of singing, dancing perkiness in the forms of Broadway dynamo Gretchen Wyler (February 16, 1932), chirpy television canary Peggy King (February 16, 1930), the astonishingly wasp-waisted Vera-Ellen (February 16, 1921 - August 30, 1981), and Andrews Sisters frontwoman Patty Andrews (February 16, 1918).

Needless to say, we're enamored of both sugar and spice here at SSUWAT, and truly enjoy and admire all of these birthday celebrants. Whether your preferences run towards triple-lashed decadence or Dory Schary-approved wholesomeness, we hope that you endeavor to make every day a celebration - and that SSUWAT helps you along a bit!

It's a Very Vera-Ellen Week
_01.jpg)
On Sunday, we went to see the lavish Broadway production of White Christmas; and we just came in from the absolutely enchanting Encores! presentation of On the Town. Reviews to follow, darlings; we're pooped!
