One of the most gorgeous women to ever step in front of the movie camera, Arlene Dahl is probably better known for her ultra-feminine flawlessness than for any role she might have essayed. Perhaps most famously, she paired with fellow redheaded bombshell Rhonda Fleming in the neo-noir Slightly Scarlet (1956). But Dahl really gained her reputation through her many marriages and romances, her beauty columns, and her own cosmetics firm.
Well after her film career had effectively ended in the late 1950's, Arlene Dahl was heralded as an expert on feminine grace and beauty. In the face of Flower Power and Woodstock, Dahl held firm to her ideals of how to be a woman in a man's world; and while she updated her look and image, she always remained a perfect lady.
In the 1970's, Arlene fulfilled a lifelong ambition to become the toast of Broadway, stepping into the legendary role of Margo Channing in the musical Applause!; Lauren Bacall and Anne Baxter had preceeded her. Dahl closed the show in 1972.
Miss Arlene Dahl turns 80 this August 11, and remains a visible and glamorous fixture on the Hollywood social scene. We bow in homage to this most gloriously feminine of creatures, and wish nothing but good things for her future.
